Shredding is an important control for selected data-bearing media, but a mature retirement process also decides which equipment can be redeployed, sanitised, sold, recycled or recovered for parts.
Start with classification
Each asset should be assessed by media type, data sensitivity, condition, age, ownership and potential value. That classification sets the approved treatment pathway.
Reuse can create value, but it requires proof
Redeployment or resale may reduce cost and waste. It should only proceed after the data treatment method is approved, completed and recorded.
Recycling is an equipment outcome, not automatically a data outcome
Sending an item to e-waste does not by itself prove that data-bearing media was sanitised or destroyed. The data action and environmental action should both be visible.
Destruction remains the right pathway for some assets
Damaged drives, high-risk media, unsupported technology and equipment that cannot be reliably sanitised may require physical destruction.
Close the full record
A complete retired ICT record should show what was released, how each asset was treated, what value remained, what was recycled, what was destroyed and which exceptions remain.
